P

Just to get us in the mood

The mood for what is the question.

I don't think we can get away with this sort of outfit at the dinner (sorry Steve) but I'm sure you can wear the aviators later in the holiday, Monty.

In fact I'm sure we can all rustle up some for a visit to this place.

Its where they filmed the bar scene in Top Gun.

I think we should definitely go as long as Pete promises not to sing 'You lost that lovin' feeling' again.
Ooooh look! I can add things too and I'm not even going! But I am going to COLOMBIA! Hooray!!!!!

Flights and prices etc...

OK, so I found some flight prices just so we know what we're aiming at.

They range from about £410 to £500, so get saving now (or in my case keep your fingers crossed for a decent bonus). I'm not sure if it'll be better to book earlier or later as far as price but I'm guessing there may be better deals later on. North Western and Delta seem to offer good prices.

We can probably get a house for about £250 each per week, depending on sleeping arrangements and who bunks up with who. For example this place http://www.vacationhomerentals.com/vacation-rentals/San-Diego-California-HUGE-Brand-New-Mission-Beach-House-Steps-to-Pacif-proID-7115.html

Other than that there's hotels and if we go for the absolute cheapest its about £250 per week (about £350 for the rest). Obviously if 2 people share a room then its cheaper. It basically depends on the choice between having the run of a house or living in a hotel. I think I favour a house but a hotel might be cheaper, slightly.

Car rental is about £200 for 2 weeks for an average saloon.

So that's what I've got so far. I might actually send guys the link to this now :-)

Because I'm a control freak...

...here's some meat to the bones of my plan.

Fly out to San Diego on the 27th Dec (or 28th but that seems to be way more expensive!) and spend New Year's Eve on the USS Midway. Here's a link for last year's event
http://www.midway.org/site/pp.asp?c=coIMKTMCF&b=2084977 so you can see hopefully going to be like.

Then, depending on every one's budget and holiday allowances, we spend time sight seeing and generally having fun. I'm planning for at least 2 weeks total as I want to see a bit more of Southern California than I did in the 3 days I had last time.

My are that we get a gang together for the Gala dinner, as its tables of 10, but those 10 don't have to even be staying together, let alone spending 2 weeks driving each other mad. This allows for people we don't all know to go, spend New Year together and then bugger off and do their own thing. Does that make sense?

So the idea is...

...to recreate Monty's fabulous Top Gun party in the city where it was filmed (well, mostly) by spending New Year's Eve at the gala dinner on the USS Midway in San Diego harbour. Its not going to be a cheap but I think we can do it at a sensible price, especially if we stay in a rented beach house and not hotels.

On that note, and as I intend to put all info here just to stop me forgetting it, I'd like to point out the name of this place and suggest we have to stay here http://www.findvacationrentals.com/4944
